Cheryl Canterbury lives and works in Wayne, WV. Born in LaGrange, GA and raised in South Charleston, WV, she earned her BFA (1987) and MAT (2009), both from Marshall University.
Her love of art began early and has had surprising turns through the years, beginning with the creation of handmade paper in the bathtub the summer of her ninth grade year, unbeknownst to her mother who was away at work! After graduation from Marshall, she worked in advertising during the transition to digital media, and left as Art Director to raise her daughter, who opened Cheryl?s eyes to the joy and beauty of teaching. Cheryl has taught Art and Math in the middle grades, and gives figure skating lessons in South Charleston as well.
Cheryl?s work flaunts the extraordinary that is found around us in plain view. ?I invite you to step into the world of my painting and pause a moment to see how marvelous the familiar can be.?
Her work has been accepted into The WV Juried Exhibition, Cultural Center; A River Runs Through It, Kentucky Highlands Museum (first place, watercolor); Tri-State Arts Association Biennial Exhibit, Huntington Museum of Art; Made in Appalachia Exhibit, 1414 Gallery at TSHD Architects, and Fall Festival Art Exhibit, Wayne UMC.
She is a member of Tri-State Arts Association, Made in Appalachia, is affiliated with the Praise Painters group and has been recognized for leadership in Arts Education by Artsonia.com and Wayne County Schools.
